Overview and Rationale

Established in 2007, the institute offers a distinctive flagship M.Arch. programme in Architecture Education, conceived with the vision of creating a specialized platform for the study of teaching, learning, practice and pedagogy in architectural education.

At the time of its inception, the programme was the first of its kind in India, offering an exclusive postgraduate course focused on Architecture Education.

Designed as a two-year, four-semester postgraduate programme, the course has an annual intake of 20 students. It is recognized by the Council of Architecture (COA), Government of Maharashtra, and R.T.M. Nagpur University.

01

The objective of this programme is to offer a professional course to architects who wish to be associated with teaching.

02

This programme is also most sought after by architects who want to enhance into a finer approach to professional practice.

Genesis of Program

The programme was conceptualized through the vision of Late Prof. S. A. Deshpande Dr. Ujwala Chakradeo, and Dr. Lakshmi Rao following a significant discussion with Late Master Architect B. V. Doshi, whose perspectives on architectural education and the role of the architect helped shape the academic vision of the programme. The founding concept brought together the disciplines of architecture, education, psychology, and pedagogy, with contributions from eminent academicians and professionals from these fields.

Today all schools of architecture require highly skilled professionals who can delve deeply into the design philosophy of the school and translate it into fine design solutions. This is possible only if the teacher has an in-depth knowledge of the pedagogical processes and also of teaching techniques.
Over the years, the programme has evolved as a specialized centre for understanding and advancing architectural education, preparing graduates to contribute as educators, researchers, academic leaders, and reflective practitioners in the field of architecture.
The path-breaking experiments in teaching methods adopted have resulted in the department acquiring FOUR Intellectual Property Rights (IPR).
